Sakura – Cherry blossom. Japan’s unofficial national flower. The flower has natural beauty and simplicity and has been celebrated for many centuries and hold a very prominent position in Japanese culture and society. Most Japanese schools and public buildings have Cherry blossom trees outside as the fiscal and school year both begin in April and the first day of work or school coincides with the Cherry blossom season. There are many different Cherry tree varieties in Japan. The most popular variety of Sakura in Japan is the ‘Somei Yoshino’. It’s flowers are nearly pure white, tinged with the palest pink, blooming and usually falling within a week before the leaves come out. Other varieties include Yamasakura, Yaesakura and Sidaresakura. The Yaesakura has large rich pink flowers. The Sidaresakura (or weeping cherry), has branches like those of a weeping Willow tree, bearing cascades of pink flowers.
