Sailor King of Pens KOP Maki-e Sakura Nagare Flowing Cherry Blossom Fountain Pen
Sakura Nagare translates in Japanese to "flowing cherry blossom".
The Sailor King of Pens KOP Maki-e Sakura Nagare Flowing Cherry Blossom Fountain Pen features a black urushi lacquered resin barrel and cap, with ribbons of gold powder and colorful inlaid raden (abalone shell). This unique design by maki-e artisan Todashi Nakamura depicts cherry blossoms floating down a river. Look closely in the raden and you'll find golden sakura blossoms and petals. Pieces of abalone, or raden, are embedded in the black resin to emulate a flowing river. Amongst the blue and purple, Nakamura has painted golden cherry blossom leaves and flowers. Light reflecting off of the raden mimics the movement of the water as it carries the cherry blossoms downstream.
It comes equipped with Sailor's legendary 21k gold nib in the massive King of Pens size.
Urushi lacquer is made of sap from trees grown only in East Asian countries that take 15 years to reach maturity. After years of patience and care, the sap is then harvested and mixed into lacquer, hand applied to the ebonite pen surface, and kept in high humidity until it sets into a lustrous finish that is waterproof and extraordinarily durable.
